If arriving by car . . .
Our address is Privada de San Juan de Dios #2. There are
basically three ways to approach Guanajuato by car: from Dolores Hidalgo, from
San Miguel de Allende, or by the toll highway from León, Silao, or Irapuato.
If you're coming from San Miguel or via the toll road from León, Silao, or Irapuato, watch for a big
glorieta (traffic circle) on the outskirts of Guanajuato. You can hardly miss
it, as there are stoplights overhead—the only stoplights you’ll see in our
town. As soon as you enter the traffic circle, start looking for your exit:
you'll see a Chevrolet dealership on your right, and you have to turn right
just past it (this is just before the Hotel Gran Plaza). There is a small sign there
pointing toward Presa de la Olla.
You
are now on a new road that will wind through the mountains for about five
kilometers (three miles) until it ends at a tunnel. At the far end of the
tunnel, turn right. You are now on Paseo de la Presa. Continue about
four-tenths of a kilometer (a quarter-mile) until you come to the callejón
San Juan de Dios on your right. This is the first right turn after leaving the
tunnel.
After
turning right onto San Juan de Dios, you drive uphill. This is the point where
some people get lost. That’s because, as you drive up the callejón San Juan de
Dios, you’ll see not one but two dead-end side streets, both named
Privada de San Juan de Dios. You come to the first Privada almost
immediately; it’s a turnoff to the right with several parked cars. Be careful
not to stop there but instead keep going straight uphill a couple of hundred
meters until you come to a long hairpin turn. In the middle of the hairpin, on
the left side, is the entrance to the second Privada. There is a black
wrought-iron gate there, usually open. Our house is straight ahead inside the
Privada. It’s a two-story pink house with a tall, narrow window high on the
left side. The apartment is behind the house, but ring the bell at our front
door in order to find us. Our phone number is 731-0679.
This is much easier than it sounds, we swear.
If by chance you're coming from Dolores Hidalgo, that's a little trickier. Look
for signs to Embajadoras or Presa, then follow the directions above.
Finally, please let us know your approximate time of arrival so that we can be
sure to be home to welcome you.
Good luck and buen viaje.
