If arriving by bus . . .
Our address is Privada de San Juan de Dios #2. After arriving at the Guanajuato bus station, look for a taxi outside. A ride to our house typically costs about 40 pesos, maybe 50 if you have lots of luggage. The taxis have no meters, so the fare is whatever you and the driver agree to. Ask the fare before you get into the cab: ¿Cuánto cobra? By the way, it's not customary to tip the driver in Mexico unless you've got tons of luggage or he performs some special service.
Tell the driver you want the callejón San Juan de Dios in the Presa neighborhood of Guanajuato. Any driver should know where that is, but it's a good idea to follow along with these directions just in case. Shortly after leaving the bus station, you'll take a new road through the countryside for about five kilometers (three miles) until you come to a tunnel. At the far end of the tunnel the driver will turn right onto a main street called Paseo de la Presa. After about a quarter-mile, he'll take the very first right turn he can, onto the callejón San Juan de Dios.
You're almost here, but now comes the tricky part. After turning right onto San Juan de Dios, you drive uphill. This is the point where some people get lost. That’s because, as you drive up San Juan de Dios, you’ll see not one but two dead-end side streets, both named Privada de San Juan de Dios. You come to the first Privada almost immediately; it’s a turnoff to the right with several parked cars. Be careful not to stop there but instead keep going straight uphill a couple of hundred meters until you come to a long hairpin turn. In the middle of the hairpin, on the left side, is the entrance to the second Privada. There is a black wrought-iron gate there, usually open. Our house is straight ahead inside the Privada. It’s a two-story pink house with a tall, narrow window high on the left side, and the number 2 on the front door. The apartment is behind the house, but ring the bell at our front door in order to find us. Our phone number is 731-0679.
This is much easier than it sounds, we swear.
Finally, please let us know your approximate time of arrival so that we can be sure to be home to welcome you.
Good luck and buen viaje.
